NGC Teams are part of a growing movement of young people across the countrywho are taking action to create the world they deserve to inherit. Over the course of an academic year, student-led NGC Teams focus on mobilizing support for their grassroots partner project. Students address issues stemming from—and causing the perpetuation of—extreme poverty. From HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa to health care for women in Mexico, students support grassroots partner projects in three important ways—by generating and giving funds, by acting as advocates, and by educating their local community in the United States about the issues facing their partners. Students' work helps address urgent global problems today, and equips young people to support sustainable solutions. NGC is equipping a generation of new global citizens—young people who play a role in creating a more just, equitable and sustainable world.
NGC Team: Oxford Academy, California
Project: Afghan Institute of Learning, Afghanistan Intermediary Partner: Creating Hope International
About the School: Oxford Academy is a large, public charter high school located in Cypress, California. About the Team: The NGC Team at Oxford Academy to work in partnership with the Afghan Institute of Learning. They advocated on behalf of womens’ and childrens’ issues in Afghanistan to raise awareness on their campus and within their community. In doing so, they urged students to take action and fight for basic human rights in Afghanistan, by supporting AIL in empowering women and children through education and medical attention. Throughout the year the team focused on Afghanistan in order to make the biggest impact and change they possible could. Team Events/Activities: Throughout the year the team educated 1,300 people and raised $7,000 US. Some of their amazing events included: 1. Screening of the “Kite Runner”movie- They had great attendance, and discussed themes of the film in relation to their project. 2. Awareness Week- They held various activities like “day without desks”, “day without a voice”, “letters for peace” which were symbolic of the oppression that women face in Afghanistan and the lack of resources in Afghanistan. An Afghan refugee also spoke to 100+ community members. They raised around $1,700 by selling shirts, bracelets, and patches, and had a huge impact in their community. 3. Band Aid Carnival- They held a Fundraising Week and had activities from “Adopt a Child” to various class competitions to donations and the support of sponsors – which culminated in a Benefit Concert and Carnival. They got two local bands, Burning Tree Project and Far East Movement, to perform. The event was hugely successful with 700+ people attending and $5,000 raised! |
