Nominated for 2005 Nobel Peace Prize

Sakena Yacoobi, Executive Director of the Afghan Institute of Learning and Vice President of Creating Hope International, was  nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize with 999 other women working for peace around the world.

These phenomenal women were nominated  collectively by an organization called 1,000 Peace Women.

After three years of work, 1,000 Peace Women  compiled and nominated 1,000 women in 2005 to represent the millions of women around the world who work for peace and a better future, often with scant regard for their own safety.

1,000 Peace Women was founded on the belief that women’s efforts to promote peace are tremendously valuable and should be acknowledged and recognized. However, with the exception of 12 women, the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, since it was first awarded in 1901, have all been men.

Through the nomination of these women to jointly receive the prize, 1,000 Peace Women  demonstrated to the world the profound impact of women’s work to promote peace, reconciliation, justice and a better future.

These women continue to be  inspiring and courageous and each is  Nobel Prize worthy in her own right. For more information about the 1,000 Peace Women project, please visit
